www.theindieexplorer.com Lighthearted travel tips and tales for the sole traveller From Heathrow Airport to New Zealand, The Indie Explorer continues his journey down under In this episode The Indie Explorer travels to New Zealand: Hokitika, Greymouth, Nelson and The Abel Tasman in the South Island. He checks out the small town of Hokitika and goes for a tramp in Greymouth before checking out the mining disaster at the Brunner mine. Then he heads north and arrives in sunny Nelson. Here he checks out some horse racing before heading to the Abel Tasman. He'll kayak along the Tasman, looking at seals and hundreds of tropical beaches, before camping for the night and then treking through bush the rest of the way. Loads of tips and travel advice as per usual including the best way to travel round New Zealand. Plus the soundtrack is provided by unsigned artist from around the world!

Entering Nelson, Halifax St (Upper South Island) New Zealand. Interesting little town, very nice - but not somewhere you'd want to live for a long time. Good for a holiday or retirement only one feels.

Nelson is the creative centre of the South Island and also receives the most sunshine. The sceneray here ranges from fantastic beaches to forests and valleys. A coastal paradise, Abel Tasman National Park can be explored by water taxi or walking and is an absolute must on any itinerary. Kayak the waters to split Apple Rock or settle into a lodge after a good days walking.

A truly magical place with amazing scenery in every direction. We drove a total of 2500km in 7 days, beginning our trip on the northern tip of the South Island in Picton, and working our way down the west coast camping along the way all the way through to Queenstown, then to Invercargill to reach the southern tip of the South Island (Stirling Point) and then back up the east coast through to Christchurch. Enjoy!

New Zealand's South Island has fantastic scenery. Photos aren't as good as being there, but here's a glimpse of South Island views from places like Mapua near Nelson, the Lewis Pass, Punakaiki on the West Coast, Arthurs Pass and the Canterbury Plains.
